Commercial Gas Pipework Installation
Your commercial premises depends on safe, compliant gas pipework. Whether you are fitting out a new unit, extending an existing kitchen, or replacing aged steel pipework in a factory or workshop, Wayne Edwards carries out first-fix commercial pipework installation to current Gas Safe and IGEM standards.
Commercial pipework differs from domestic in scale, material and testing requirements. We install:
- Rigid steel pipework for industrial and high-demand premises
- Copper pipework for smaller commercial kitchens and offices
- Appropriately rated gas meters, emergency control valves (ECVs) and isolation points
- Correctly sized runs calculated for pressure drop and appliance demand
- Pipework tested and purged in line with IGEM/UP/1B (up to 1m³ systems)
We liaise with Wales & West Utilities where new or upgraded meter connections are needed, and we provide full gas safety documentation on completion of any pipework installation.
Non-Domestic Hot Water Boilers
Commercial hot water boilers heat water for schools, care homes, offices, gyms, hotels, pubs and similar non-domestic premises. These systems are larger and more complex than domestic combi or system boilers and require an engineer with specific non-domestic boiler qualifications.
Wayne Edwards installs, services, repairs and certifies indirect-fired commercial hot water boilers, including wall-hung commercial boiler cascades and floor-standing units from leading commercial manufacturers.
Our commercial boiler services include:
- Installation of new commercial hot water boilers and cascades
- Annual servicing and gas safety inspections
- Breakdown repairs and fault diagnosis
- Flue and ventilation checks to current regulations
- Advice on boiler sizing, efficiency upgrades and condensing boiler replacement
- Hot water flow and return checks
If your premises has an ageing commercial boiler approaching the end of its serviceable life, we can quote for a like-for-like replacement or advise on upgrading to a more efficient modern condensing cascade system that will reduce running costs.
Non-Domestic Air Heating Equipment
Commercial buildings are frequently heated using dedicated non-domestic air heating equipment rather than wet radiator systems. Wayne Edwards is Gas Safe qualified to install, service and repair the three main types of commercial air heating found across South Wales:
Direct Fired Appliances
Direct-fired air heaters burn natural gas directly into the airstream they are heating. They are commonly used in warehouses, distribution units, factories and large workshops where rapid air heating is needed and there is sufficient ventilation for combustion products to dissipate safely. We install and service cabinet heaters and make-up air handling units for commercial clients across Carmarthenshire and the Swansea area.
Indirect Fired Heating Appliances
Indirect-fired heaters keep combustion completely separate from the heated airstream using a heat exchanger, making them suitable for premises where the products of combustion cannot be introduced to the occupied space – such as schools, sports halls, showrooms, industrial units and food-handling areas. We service indirect-fired warm air units, suspended unit heaters and cabinet heaters from leading commercial manufacturers.
Overhead Plaque & Radiant Tube Heaters
Overhead radiant heaters are the most efficient choice for heating large, high-ceiling spaces – aircraft hangars, workshops, commercial garages, warehouses, MOT bays and engineering units. They heat objects and people directly, rather than wastefully heating the entire air volume, so running costs are significantly lower than traditional warm-air systems in tall or poorly insulated spaces.
We install, service and repair:
- Radiant plaque heaters – ceramic plaque units that provide targeted overhead heat
- Radiant tube heaters – linear U-tube and straight-tube heaters for longer runs
All overhead heater installations include correct flue and ventilation checks, clearance-to-combustibles assessment, and commissioning to the manufacturer specification.
Commercial Gas Safety Certificates
Every commercial property owner, landlord, facilities manager or tenant with a gas appliance on the premises has a legal duty to ensure those appliances are safe, maintained and annually inspected by a Gas Safe registered engineer holding commercial tickets.
Wayne Edwards issues commercial gas safety certificates for:
- Commercial hot water boilers
- Non-domestic warm air heating appliances
- Landlord commercial gas safety checks on HMOs, B&Bs and mixed commercial/residential premises
- Pipework soundness testing and purging (up to 1m³ volumes per IGEM/UP/1B)
All certificates are issued with a detailed inspection record listing each appliance, its condition, any defects found, and remedial recommendations. Failing to produce a current commercial gas safety certificate can invalidate your building insurance and leave the duty holder personally liable in the event of an incident.
Commercial Pipework Testing & Purging
Any new or altered commercial gas installation must be tightness tested and purged before being commissioned. Wayne Edwards carries out commercial tightness testing and purging on pipework systems up to 1m³ volume, in line with IGEM/UP/1B.
Testing and purging is required when:
- New pipework has been installed
- Existing pipework has been altered, extended or repaired
- An appliance has been disconnected and later reconnected
- A smell of gas has been reported and the installation needs to be proven safe
- Meter or ECV replacement work has been carried out
We issue a purge certificate on completion, giving you and your insurer formal evidence that the installation has been tested to current standards.

Commercial Gas Frequently Asked Questions
Do I legally need a commercial Gas Safe engineer for my business premises?
Yes. Any gas appliance in a non-domestic setting – shop, office, school, pub, warehouse, workshop – must be installed, serviced and inspected by a Gas Safe registered engineer holding the specific commercial qualifications for that appliance type. A domestic-only engineer is not legally permitted to work on commercial equipment, even if it looks similar to a domestic appliance.
What is the difference between a domestic and a commercial gas safety certificate?
Domestic certificates (CP12 landlord gas safety records) cover appliances below 70kW net input in residential premises. Commercial certificates cover non-domestic appliances, which are typically higher input and inspected against different ventilation, flue and testing standards. Commercial premises almost always need commercial-scope certification, even where individual appliances fall below the domestic threshold.
Do you cover LPG or bulk commercial gas work?
No. Wayne Edwards is Gas Safe qualified for commercial natural gas only. If your premises runs on LPG bulk tanks or industrial bulk gas, we would recommend a specialist LPG-registered commercial engineer. We are happy to advise and can often point you in the right direction for work outside our scope.
How often should commercial gas appliances be serviced?
Most commercial gas equipment should be serviced and safety-checked annually as a minimum, and in many cases the manufacturer warranty, insurance policy or lease agreement will require more frequent inspection. Catering equipment in high-use restaurants and kitchens often benefits from six-monthly servicing due to heavy use and the safety implications of failure.
Can you install overhead radiant heaters in my warehouse or workshop?
Yes. We install both radiant plaque heaters and radiant tube heaters in commercial premises across Llanelli, Carmarthen, Swansea and surrounding areas. Overhead radiant systems are typically far more energy-efficient than warm-air heating for tall, poorly-insulated spaces, and we can advise on the right configuration for your building following a free site survey.
Can you take over servicing from our current engineer?
Absolutely. Many of our commercial customers move to us from larger national contractors because they prefer working with a local, independent engineer who answers the phone personally. We will carry out an initial survey and commissioning inspection before taking on any existing equipment so you have a clear baseline record.
